Stephen King’s “On Writing”

Stephen King as we all know is very different, & unique. So when my instructor told me I would be reading a book by Stephen King I had no idea what to expect!

My favorite quote from Stephen King’s book “On Writing,” that I’ve read so far was,

“Let’s get one thing clear right now, shall we? There is no Idea Dump, no Story Central, no Island of the Buried Bestsellers; good story ideas seem to come quite literally from nowhere, sailing at you right out of the empty sky: two previously unrelated ideas come together and make something new under the sun. Your job isn’t to find these ideas but to recognize them when they show up”

This really hit me because, be honest have you ever read anything so true? Have you ever wondered where and how all these famous best selling authors get their marvelous ideas from? ME TOO!  But reality is, it doesn’t come from these people thinking and brainstorming the ideas which they write from, our imagination can only develop so far sitting in a chair picking our brains. Where it really comes from is passion and the ability to live life and explore! You must be ready to recognize great ideas out of the blue, out of nowhere!

Think about, I know that I don’t write, just to write. I wait until I have a spark or idea arouse me. The best work comes from a writer who has felt a passion ignite or spark fly.

The quote, “Let’s get one thing clear right now, shall we? Your job isn’t to find these ideas but to recognize them when they show up.” (and yes I did just make you read it again, its that great!) Stands out to me for many different reasons, one, it describes what makes a good writer while also explaining why being a truly inspiring writer is so difficult.

Don’t just write to write or because you have to, go take a walk, drink some coffee at the local coffee shop, get up and find your inspiration, go get your spark! BE GREAT!
